The year was 1968, and the simple but garish lighting of the Herbie Mann Live at the Whisky A Go Go front cover, glowing with the thick Technicolor aura that was typical of the cinema of that era, was as much responsible for the album's reputation as a "happening scene" as the tepid jazz-funk in the grooves. Photographer Larry Browne was responsible; the club got more out of this photo session than from all the advertising it actually paid for that year.
