Artot was a mezzo-soprano and horn player who focused her attenions on voice and later extended her range so as to incorporate the soprano. She sang with the Paris Opera, traveled through France and Belgium as well as Italy and Germany. She sang both Rosina and Leonora in "Il travatore," Angelina in "La Cenerentola," and Madalena in "Rigoletto." As well as her repertory Jean Desire taught voice and even turned down the marriage proposal of Tchaikovsky.
