Talented Latin percussionist from Uruguay Hugo Machado, also known as Foca, began his instrumentalist career by the end of the 1960s, joining a group called Kanela y su Baracutanga in 1975 and working along with composer Eduardo Da Luz. In 1988, the musician played along with singer/songwriter Yábor at Colquin's Folk Festival, a major traditional music event in South America. He soon performed at Buenos Aires' Obras Sanitarias in a show called El Candombazo, playing Afro-Uruguayan drums. When Hugo Machado joined Raíces, the artist had the opportunity to participate on their album Empalme.
