US rock band Griffin was originally formed in 1981 around a trio of William Rodrick McCay (vocals), Rick Cooper (guitar), and Rick Wagner (drums). However, it was only with the expanded line-up of Yaz (guitar) and Thomas Sprayberry (bass) that they began to make progress. Signed to Shrapnel/SPV Records in 1985, they made their debut with Flight Of The Griffin, a solid hard rock collection with the material consistently accentuating McCay’s vocal delivery. Yaz and Sprayberry then left the group, leaving Cooper to double up on bass for Griffin’s second album, 1987’s Protectors Of The Lair. Once again, this failed to expand their audience and the original trio parted soon after its release. (NB: Not to be confused with the late 60s UK pop band of the same name featuring Kenny Craddock.)
