Formed in Scotland in the mid-70s, Flying Squad were a proficient if unspectacular hard rock group in the gritty, unpretentious vein of Tank or Fastway. Comprising Ian Muir (vocals), Monty McMonagle (guitar), Alex Calder (guitar), George Crossan (bass) and Jim Kelly (drums), they recorded a self-titled debut album in 1978 which was produced by Francis Rossi of Status Quo. Played with agility and imbued with considerable melodic presence, it augured well for the group with Muir’s stylish vocals attracting particular praise. However, it was never followed up, and Muir eventually defected to form Waysted (under the pseudonym ‘Fin’).
