Shimelis Beyene (b. 1 April 1952, Ethiopia; trumpet), Mengesha Teferi (b. 25 May 1954, Ethiopia; guitar), Frew Mengiste (26 November 1966, Ethiopia; bass), Berhane Kidane (b. 10 April 1961, Ethiopia; keyboards), Neser Awel (b. 31 December 1955, Ethiopia; drums). Formed in 1981 by Beyene, the Ethio Stars initially featured musicians who had previously been members of two of the most successful bands in Addis Ababa at the time (hence the name). Playing a mixture of Ethiopian music and classic Stax -style soul, they soon became one of the most in demand bands on the Addis live scene. Subsequently the bands incorporated other influences into their sound, (rock, funk, reggae) and performed with many of Ethiopia’s most famous singers, including Mahmoud Ahmed and Aster Aweke. Amharic Hits And Experimental Traditions From Ethiopia (1992) featured tracks by both the Ethio Stars and Tukal Band (an Ethiopian experimental folk rock group). The aptly titled Ethiopian Soul Review was a recording of a 1994 concert featuring the group backing powerhouse vocalist Teshome Wolde at the Rocket Hall in London.
