The progressive rock band Episode was formed in the mid-'80s and released several tape-only albums before recording their first CD, Starlight Tales (1993). Compared to classic progressive bands such as Yes, King Crimson, and Procol Harum, the band added a unique twist with having a female lead singer, Roe Tyler. The group also consisted of guitarist Tom Finch, Gary Scheumstuhl (drums, percussion), and Don Tyler (bass, 12-string guitar, vocals). Finch later left and was replaced by former Now guitarist Gary Morrell. Finch would appear, however, as a session musician on Starlight Tales. The band also originally featured guitarist Brian Verhalen, who left after 1990's Into the Epicenter.
