Dfrnt is a dubstep producer from the United Kingdom associated with the label Echodub who made his album debut in 2009 with Metafiction. Born Alex Cowles and based in Edinburgh, Scotland, he not only runs Echodub but also manages the magazine Modus. and writes the blog Sitting Ovation, all of which are dedicated to dubstep and dub techno. He made his commercial recording debut as Dfrnt in 2008 on the Insectmind label with The Dfrnt Engine, a five-track EP. Around the same time in 2008, he founded Echodub and inaugurated the label with the release of The Forward Thinking EP, followed almost immediately by a second EP, Lounge/Wake Up. Later in 2008 he released the 20-track various-artists compilation Anechoic Chamber on Echodub, and included a couple of his own productions ("Surface," "Quite Simply"). In addition to releasing a steady stream of music on Echodub by himself as well as others in 2009, he made his album debut with Metafiction, a massive 23-track double-length effort released on the On the Edge label, along with a couple EPs, Headspace and Tripped.
