Led by Jonah Moyo, Devera Ngwena was formed in 1979 with the financial support of the Mashaba Mine Company. Originally, they were something of a cover band playing the latest Zairean hits, but they gradually developed their own style and began writing their own material. Their straightforward approach to music and lyrics, which concern everyday life, make them very popular with the working class and have helped them become one of the top-selling bands in Zimbabwe today. They toured the U.K. in 1988 and were well-received.
