Formed in Holland in the early 80s, hard rock band Dark Wizard featured Berto Van Veen (vocals), Marcel de Groot (guitar), Kees Reinders (bass) and Tony White (drums). One of their nation’s few contributors to the black metal tradition, Dark Wizard played forceful death metal with oblique, diabolical lyrics. Their first release was the Devil’s Victim mini-album for Mausoleum Records in 1984. This was followed by their full studio debut, 1985’s Reign Of Evil. As evidenced by their selection of album titles, the group’s lyrical focus remained sharply Satanic. They also hosted a notable live show where costumed skeletons and zombies emerged onstage from coffins - suggesting their dalliance with dark spirits was more entertainment-orientated than many of their peers on the Mausoleum label.
