Colonies took shape in 2006, when bandmates Travir Shumate (vocals, guitar), Christian Powers (guitar), and Adam Meeks (bassist) rounded out their existing lineup with drummer Adrian Centoni. Shumate, Powers, and Meeks had played together for several years, and the band wasted little time carving out an atmospheric indie rock sound. Recording sessions for the first Colonies EP took place that summer, with producer Randy Wheeler hosting the band at his home studio. The resulting record, Sleep Patterns, was released in August 2007, and the band toured sporadically while writing material for its first full-length release, Thirty Thousand.
