Attempting to re-create the glory days of vintage post-punk à la the Fall, California's own the Movies appeared in 2000 with a sound they describe as "the quietest punk band ever." Actually far more angular and abrasive than that description, the group was formed by ex-Vehicle Birth member Timothy James and bassist Jessica Gelt. Finding drummer Charlie Wadhams and Brian Cleary, the quartet wrote and recorded a series of tracks over the summer of 2000 with producer Jonathan Krierik. Unfortunately, the band had no outlet for the music and waited until Houston Party Records picked up the band in 2002 to release In One Era out the Other, their debut. Spending the time in between recording and releasing on the live circuit, the band made quite the impression in their native Los Angeles.
