Iowa City, IA, quartet Alto Heceta formed in 1999 when guitarists and vocalists Adam Penly and Dino Balocchi formed the band with drummer Matt Heideman and bassist Tim Borkowsky. In the fall of 2000, the band released The Safe in Stereo EP on Synaptic Tactic Records. The debut EP received national praise and the band went on to perform with such bands as Rainer Maria, Cursive, Jets to Brazil, Joan of Arc, and Nymb. That first release was on the CMJ college radio charts for four weeks. In May 2001, the band joined forces with another Iowa City band, Speed of Sauce, releasing a split CD on Synaptic Tactic. The two bands toured the Midwest to support the CD.
