The Lying In States' second full-length album consolidates their loose, quasi-experimental rock sound around Ben Clarke's vocals, which range from screams of frustration to fatalistic folk-influenced musings. "Both Sides" is an aggressive rocker that sets the scene for the first half-dozen songs, but the album's most interesting moments are provided by "Tell Me," a meandering, regretful sprawl of a song accompanied by random sound effects, bells, and drunken guitar. "Newgard" layers a stuttering rhythm under its poppy vocal, while the title track successfully negotiates its way through a succession of Radiohead-style musical curves.
