Christian post-hardcore kids from Lima, OH, Kiss the Gunner debut with the underwhelming Why Are We So Dead? Overall, Why Are We So Dead? is an entirely adequate album: mono-named sore-throat singer Nic only occasionally delves into the always-irritating "death grunt" vocals so beloved of one faction of post-hardcore bands, and even when he does, he rarely stays there long. Similarly, his bandmates do the usual post-hardcore unison riffing and start-stop dynamic shift thing, but with enough enthusiasm and energy to keep the album from sounding wholly uninspired. However, as a young band in an increasingly overcrowded field, Kiss the Gunner do little to distinguish themselves throughout Why Are We So Dead?, which falls firmly in the "OK but nothing special" category as a result. There are other bands -- even other Christian bands -- doing the same sort of thing just as well, if not better.
