This German sound installation artist's first CD in a series of audio documentaries of his miniature sonic sculptures, this striking CD on Editions RZ exhibits his artworks built with speakers and field recordings. In his sculptures, Rolf Julius uses the physics of amplified sound to create small phenomena; using the speakers to displace paint on canvas is just one of his techniques, and the results are abstract images painted by sound. On record, these sculptures create a tranquil ambience as they reverberate in the spaces in which they are installed. Environmental sounds are displaced and directed through speakers into the room, and spatial sense makes for a stunning listen. Pioneering in the sound art movement, Julius has created a series of beautiful CDs and accompanying booklets with elaborate documentation of his work.
