There are 19 recordings (nearly an hour of music) on this generous LP, with the emphasis on hot dance bands. The Casa Loma Orchestra is heard on five heated early numbers (including the original versions of "White Jazz" and "Black Jazz"), Jack Pettis's Pets has seven titles and there are performances from Eddie Thomas's Collegians, the Cotton Pickers, Irving Mills's Modernists and Stuart Hamblen's Orchestra. Many of the top studio players of the period (including trumpeter Phil Napoleon, Tommy Dorsey on trombone and trumpet and clarinetists Jimmy Dorsey and Benny Goodman) make appearances but the musicianship is uniformly excellent even from the lesser-known players. Recommended for collectors of classic jazz.
