Where Butterflies Play Review

by Scott Yanow

Barbara Paris, who has a lovely sweet voice and a gentle straightfoward style, is based in Boulder, CO. On this CD her singing is featured in three different settings. Paris performs four ballads (including Harold Vick's "Where Butterflies Play" and "Do You Know What It Means to Miss New Orleans") in duets with pianist Joe Bonner, interprets two Jobim pieces plus "How Deep Is the Ocean" while accompanied by guitarist Mitchell Long and concludes the set with four songs in which she is joined by the talented pianist Ellyn Rucker, the Stan Getz-inspired Richie Chiaraluce on tenor and bassist Dean Ross. The one fault to this program is that the tempos tend to be similar; only the closing pieces with the quartet ("Star Eyes" and "April in Paris") cook a bit. However the sincerity and appealing simplicity of Barbara Paris's style easily compensate.
