Yannick Rieu is a talented young tenor saxophonist obviously inspired by John Coltrane (who he closely emulates on the modal "Kido") but often displaying a more original sound of his own. Assisted by a fine rhythm section (pianist Laurent Fickelson, bassist Frederic Alarie and drummer Philippe Soirat), Rieu performs six often-episodic originals, Alarie's "Sens Dessus Dessous" and "Giant Steps." Most of the pieces develop as they go along and Rieu varies his own playing, building up some of his improvisations to very intense levels while also displaying the ability to play lyrically and with quiet emotion. This is a consistently stimulating program from a Canadian saxophonist who deserves much greater recognition and has the potential to be a significant force in the future.
