From freebop and torrid swinging to the Ornette Colemanish ballad "Give Up the Chair" (with strumming bass worthy of Charlie Haden), this is a consistently stimulating set. Trumpeter Rob Blakeslee, tenor saxophonist Rich Halley, bassist Clyde Reed (who is particularly outstanding), and drummer Dave Storrs all have excellent technique, open-minded styles, and creative imaginations. They also have the ability to construct colorful sound explorations seemingly out of thin air while making every note count. This is thought-provoking music well worth hearing for post-bop listeners.
