Rick Bell is a fine Atlanta-based tenor-saxophonist with an appealing sound and a fertile hard bop improvising style. Although this set was made with local musicians, the players are world-class. Best known is pianist Bill Anschell but trombonist Bob Lewis, bassist Neal Starkey, and drummer Billy Degnats are excellent too. Bell wrote eight of the ten songs (all but Anschell's "Chuckle" and the standard "Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye") and the music is straight-ahead, mildly unpredictable at times and always well played. All of these musicians deserve to be better known and this CD is easily recommended to fans of jazz's modern mainstream.
