This is a fun group. Pianist Terry Waldo heads a spirited classic jazz septet (that includes trumpeter Roy Tate, clarinetist Frank Powers, trombonist Jim Snyder, Rod MacDonald on banjo and guitar, Louise Anderson on tuba and drummer Hal Smith) that also features some sassy vocals by Susan LaMarche. The band is creative within the boundaries of 1920s jazz, paying tribute to the past in spots but also coming up with fresh solos on some lesser-known material. This recommended Stomp Off LP is highlighted by Lil Hardin's "You're Next," "Hot Mustard," "Flat Foot," "Bozo" and "Down in Honky Tonk Town."
