With Vowel Architecture, Brussels-based Israeli sound artist/composer Tobias Hazan brings into focus five years of work. Some of the ten pieces included here have been previously issued on Sub Rosa and Mille Plateaux releases, others are brand new. They fit together by creating contrasts or picking up and developing an idea only sketched previously, which means that even familiar tracks get a fresh face out of this setting. Hazan explores the limits of perception using widely different paths: atavistic speech (closely-miked throat sounds in "How Heraclite [Vowel Architecture]," detached phonemes in "B-A-Ba-P-Pt-De [Blind Image]"), enormous crescendos ("Kether"), extreme frequencies ("Chaotic Scales on Ligeti's Lontano"), etc. Highlights include the esthetic contrast obtained by the juxtaposition of "Le Buisson Ardent," built on an aggressive guitar feedback (a collaboration with Ksa), and the sound of bowls and water at the beginning of the next track; the beautiful electronic piece "Netzah"; and the delicate Satie-inspired piano melody (by David Shea) in the second half of "Mémoires d'un Surfeur au Bord du Désert" underpinning the voice of Gilles Deleuze. Hazan's three pieces inspired by the great French philosopher (the other two being "Main's Occlusion Remix: Double Bind Perspective" and "Qeria [Pour Gilles Deleuze]") are presented together for the first time on this collection. The process and the composer's intent never take the lead over poetry and meaning, insuring that Hazan's music remains organic, alive. Recommended.
