The first of three LPs reissuing all of cornetist Joe "King" Oliver's recordings for Vocalion and Brunswick with his Dixie Syncopators, this album has four very different versions of "Snag It" and two takes of the hot arrangement "Too Bad." Oliver is in generally fine form on such numbers as "Deep Henderson," the classic "Jackass Blues" and his famous "Sugar Foot Stomp." The personnel is quite strong including second trumpeter Bob Shoffner, trombonist Kid Ory, clarinetists Albert Nicholas and Johnny Dodds and Barney Bigard mostly on tenor. Some of the highlights have been reissued on a Decca CD but better to have all of these valuable performances.
