From the ashes of St. Paul, MN's Effervescent, the men of Model Down (vocalist/guitarist Sheridan Fox, drummer Nick Fox, and bassist Mike Brodleib) relocated to Boston and readied this six-song EP a year after congregating in April 2004. Inspired by indie rock innovators like Burning Airlines and Lifter Puller, the trio are both artful and fun on Voicing the Circuit. "AED"'s perky pacing and cathartic jags recall the Dambuilders, while the stuttering pace of "Contact Contracts" meshes Gang of Four, Sorry, and Fugazi with exhilarating results. If the playing seems loose at times and its frontman seems a little too volatile for the collective good, at least Model Down ain't the same old, same old. The obvious highlight here is "Rock Moves," which is a blurry spurt of noisy albeit lighthearted joy.
