Multi-instrumentalist Joe McPhee has been a significant figure in free-jazz circles since the late 1960s. John Heward is a visual artist and avant-garde percussionist based in Montreal. The two team up for VOICES: TEN IMPROVISATIONS with McPhee on alto sax and pocket trumpet and Heward playing drums, kalimba, and auxiliary percussion. These 10 pieces are organic, abstract, and deeply committed to the principle of purely spontaneous sonic exploration. Fans of either artist, or of contemporary free jazz in general, are advised to check this out.
