Up Review

by Nitsuh Abebe

Before moving to the shoegazing-influenced Fine, 27 Various seemed content to follow up on the work of its Minneapolis predecessors -- Up betrays heavy influences from the Replacements and Husker Du, and despite a few vaguely British moments, most of the record sounds a lot like the punchy power-pop of Chicago's Material Issue. Whether this is preferable to the sound of Fine is a matter of opinion -- but the songwriting on Up is consistently fair, making for a thoroughly decent (if undistinguished) record.
