There are some albums that just don't come together, and this is one of them. All the elements of Jeff Dahl's sound are on Ultra-Under -- the angry lyrics, the guitar din, the tight band -- but somehow nothing connects. The lyrics are less intelligent and focused than on other Dahl projects, and the cover of "Cherry Bomb" is downright embarrassing. The only really good tracks here are the energetic "Nobody Loves You" and "Dirt," a long, slow burner with additional guitar squall provided by guest Donita Sparks of L7. Those aside, this album is only for Dahl completists.
