There are countless collections of the pre-Island Records output of Bob Marley & the Wailers on the market, and all too often these are thrown together with little or no annotation. Couple this with the Wailers' tendency to re-record songs in new styles as their career progressed, and you have the recipe for a discography nightmare. This release is a case in point, tossing together productions by Leslie Kong ("Soul Shakedown Party," "Cheer Up"), Bunny Lee ("Mr. Chatterbox"), and Lee "Scratch" Perry ("Mr. Brown," "Kaya") in random order. That it works as well as it does as a sequence has more to do with the execution and talent of the Wailers than it has to do with any kind of plan by the compilers. The music is great, but you can easily get it elsewhere in better -documented and more comprehensive packages.
