AllMusic Review by

A wide-ranging survey of musical folklore from the Transylvanian region of Romania, it was collected during the '70s. Every one of these selections is a genuine, and often surprisingly primitive, example of peasant music. The emphasis here is on solo vocals, vocal ensembles, flute music, and tarafs -- small ensembles, primarily of Gypsy origin, which feature violin as the lead instrument. Although the recording quality is inconsistent and somewhat distracting from one cut to the next, the variety and potency of the pieces are more than sufficient to hold one's attention throughout the 20-track, 50-minute program. It's a must for those who lust after a pure untainted folk sound.
