Recorded from a live performance in Amherst, MA, Iva Ambush and group run through a short play list of five standards, not all of which (e.g., "The Frim Fram Sauce" and "My Favorite Things") are torch songs, despite the album title. (With no liner notes, it's hard to tell what the singer had in mind with the Torch Songs title.) Nevertheless, Ambush does well with the rather slim agenda on this release. She's whimsical on "Skylark," upbeat and enthusiastic on "The Frim Fram Sauce," poignant on "Lover Man," and hopeful on "Please Send Me Someone to Love." She has good support from a fine set of local musicians; the outstanding bass solo by Wes Biles on "Skylark" is particularly notable. Scott Ambush, who has worked with Spyra Gyra, shows up with his bass on the last track. Far too short, this album is hopefully just an appetizer for a fuller course of music to be served in a future album.
