On the second of two long out-of-print Onyx LPs to salute a variety of trumpeters, there are quite a few classic recordings. Louis Armstrong is heard on his complete European session of 1934, fronting an 11-piece group for memorable versions of "St. Louis Blues" (heard in two takes), "Super Tiger Rag," the eccentric "Song of the Vipers," "Will You, Won't You Be My Baby" and the two-part "On the Sunny Side of the Street." In addition Bobby Hackett is in particularly lyrical form in 1945 on "Pennies from Heaven" and "Rose of the Rio Grande" and Buck Clayton matches well with tenor-saxophonist Flip Phillips and pianist Teddy Wilson on three standards and a blues. Brilliant music.
