Although there are already far too many dance acts going under the alias of X-Dream, Italy's M. Barnabei throws his proverbial glow stick into the ring of trance to show that the post-Cold War club genre can be just as vital in the land of Michelangelo and the Mafia as anywhere else. This EP has the usual swishing high hats and effervescent basslines of uplifting trance, but it displays much more haunting, elegiac synth melodies that are -- thankfully -- more in touch with skewed Dutch anthems than the bubbly accessible domestic efforts proliferating the clubs. This Is the Future takes quite some effort to track down, demands asking if yet another X-Dream is needed in dance (name-wise or music-wise), yet one should never undervalue the comforting idea of intelligent, Italian trance. As odd as that may sound.
