On this recording of enjoyable pop songs mixed with vibrant rock tunes, singer/songwriter Karen Holley sounds a little like Pat Benatar and a little like Natalie Merchant culled with Alanis Morissette. Along with her partner, cowriter/guitarist Mark Delahanty they are (A IS A), a fresh music act out of Toronto, Ontario and Thinking Chair is their intriguing debut. This is a fine, commercially viable offering, filled with layered power guitars and crystal clear vocal harmonies. Their arrangements are mainly dependent on frenetic guitars, but the acoustic tracks ("Thinking Chair" and "Beautiful") highlight what is basically an eclectic blend of ballads and rock, making Thinking Chair a nicely worthwhile release of appealing mainstream-ready music.
