The title says "provocative films," not provocative themes, but several of these are welcome interpretations. In fact, there is a languorous, Last Tango in Paris, romantic sleaziness to this album. First, adults and the Sesame Street set can wear out "Mah Na Mah Na," the zany tune from Sweden Heaven and Hell (used heavily by Benny Hill in his television show). This orchestral version has solos galore as well as its own odd, quirky instruments such as kazoo. Billy Strange's themes from De Sade and Emotions (with electric guitar) from Medium Cool are other highlights. Les Baxter completists will be interested in his theme from All the Loving Couples. Co-written with Milo Frank, it's an upbeat, mod-brass standout with "wordless chorus" and funky "big beat" bass, only mildly harmed by strings.
