This very enjoyable set features pianist Art Hodes in three different trios with a variety of legendary jazz pioneers. The clarinet spot is filled on four songs apiece by either Darnell Howard, George Lewis, or the forgotten but talented Volly DeFault. The other position is taken by either drummer Baby Dodds (on one of his very last dates), banjoist Lawrence Marrero, or Jasper Taylor, who may have been the first washboard player back in the early 1920s. The Lewis tracks were privately recorded, while the remaining performances were originally released on a ten-inch Paramount LP. Everyone plays quite well, and the contrasts between the clarinetists' styles make this a particularly special collection.
