Rudi Blesh's historic This Is Jazz radio series has never been fully released on records; hopefully George Buck's Jazzology label will get around to it eventually. This collector's import LP has two of the shows and they feature some of the top classic jazz veterans in freewheeling performances. The earlier set is streakier but has its exciting moments, with contributions by trumpeters Punch Miller and Max Kaminsky, clarinetists Albert Nicholas and Mezz Mezzrow, trombonist George Brunies, pianist Luckey Roberts, bassist Wellman Braud, Cyrus St. Clair on tuba and drummer Baby Dodds. The later date is a bit more consistent with cornetist Muggsy Spanier, Nicholas returning on clarinet, Sidney Bechet on soprano, trombonist Brunies, pianist James P. Johnson (who gets "Caprice Rag" as his feature), guitarist Danny Barker, bassist Pops Foster and drummer Dodds. Recommended music for traditional jazz collectors but this LP will be hard to find.
