The Thin Man Meets Fat Boy, Vol. 1 Review

by Scott Yanow

The four LPs in the Misterioso series are truly for bop fanatics who need everything, for the amount of alternate takes (mostly unissued) is a bit staggering. The first album has four titles from tenor-saxophonist Wardell Gray's quartet with pianist Al Haig, bassist Tommy Potter and drummer Roy Haynes (including "Twisted"); the 11 other versions of the songs are on Misterioso 1982 and 1983. In addition there are four famous titles ("Wailing Wall," "Go," "Infatuation" and "Stop") from tenor-saxophonist Don Lanphere's date with trumpeter Fats Navarro, Haig, Potter and drummer Max Roach; each song is heard three times on this album and there are seven other renditions on Misterioso 1982, stretching out the four pieces to 17 performances. Fortunately the playing is excellent but it helps to be a bit fanatical.
