Music from nations ending in “land” generally has an idiosyncratic, glacial beauty that befits its lush landscapes. And apparently there’s something quite mysterious lurking beneath Finland’s gorgeous waters and greenery. THE SIREN’S WAVE is something like an instrumental album you’d hear on a massage table, if the person rubbing down your back was harboring a strange and intriguing secret. Hanna Tuulikki’s vocals, which land somewhere between Joanna Newsom and a mystical witch, set in motion an assortment of entrancing reed and string instruments and create an unforgettably uncomfortable hypnosis. WAVE is mind-bendingly meditative stuff, no matter what region you hail from.
