The Ronnie Dove Collection, Pt. 1 is the first in a series of three CDs that pair two of Dove's '60s albums on each disc. Collection, Pt. 1 has Dove's first charting album from 1965, One Kiss for Old Times' Sake, and I'll Make All Your Dreams Come True from later the same year. Like the other discs in the series, Collection, Pt. 1 contains excellent music presented in either mediocre or abysmal sound quality, depending on the listener's attention to sonic detail. Stereophiles, in particular, will be disappointed by the mastering. The recordings seem to have been taken from vinyl sources and are shrill in spots with audible surface noise. Nonetheless, Dove is a tremendous vocalist who is so effective on sad songs that you can practically hear the tears falling. The two albums on Collection, Pt. 1 have four of Dove's biggest hits -- "One Kiss for Old Times' Sake," "A Little Bit of Heaven," "I'll Make All Your Dreams Come True," and "Kiss Away" -- all of which were arranged by Ray Stevens. Impressively, the hits do not tower above the surrounding tracks -- Dove's performance quality and the caliber of songs are consistently high throughout. Even if the master tapes have been lost, someone could create better vinyl-to-CD transfers than this. Barring an upgrade, Collection, Pt. 1 is better than nothing and will be good enough for many listeners.
