AllMusic Review by

That a score as dull and lifeless as The Real McCoy would accompany a heist movie is utterly baffling -- few genres rely so heavily on music, but it's impossible to imagine Brad Fiedel's grating melodies generating anything resembling action or suspense. It doesn't help that Fiedel the arranger stabs Fiedel the composer in the back -- a mishmash of electronic sounds, electric violin, and saxophone, the music seems assembled from whatever instruments were already in the studio at the time the recording sessions commenced. Moreover, there's little continuity from theme to theme -- at worst, The Real McCoy sounds as if it was patched together from other film scores, none of them worth listening to, either.
