Pianist James Dapogny, in his recording debut as a leader, does a good job of interpreting a dozen of Jelly Roll Morton's compositions. Dapogny's improvisations are fairly subtle, mostly sticking close to Morton's written-out music and giving listeners a good introduction to the jazz pioneer's style. This deluxe LP also has extensive and definitive liner notes.
