AllMusic Review by

One of many valuable box sets released by Columbia in the mid-'60s, this particular three-LP reissue has 47 selections that range from jazz and dance music to pop vocals and piano solos. Paul Whiteman's Orchestra is well-represented and such major names of the 1920s as Duke Ellington, Bing Crosby, Joe Venuti, Louis Armstrong, Ted Lewis, Ruth Etting, Ethel Waters, Sophie Tucker, Rudy Vallee and Kate Smith are also heard from, in addition to lesser knowns such as Cass Hagan's Park Central Hotel Orchestra, Red McKenzie (a great version of "From Monday On"), Blossom Seely and Lee Morse. Although not quite essential, there are enough rarities on the set (in addition to a very attractive booklet) to make this box worth searching for.
