The Metronome All-Stars' recording sessions of 1939-1950 teamed a wide variety of poll winners (and runners-up, when the winners were not available). Some of the dates were recorded by RCA and Capitol. The Columbia dates are on this Tax LP, five sessions in all (including all of the alternate takes) from 1940, 1941, 1942, 1946, and 1950. The first three sessions are dominated by top swing players, including Harry James, Cootie Williams, Roy Eldridge, Jack Teagarden, Benny Goodman, Benny Carter, Charlie Barnet, Jess Stacy, Count Basie, Charlie Christian, and Gene Krupa, among many others. While the 1946 set has vocals by Nat "King" Cole, Frank Sinatra, and June Christy (along with contributions from Charlie Shavers, Johnny Hodges, and Coleman Hawkins), the final two titles are strictly bebop, with Dizzy Gillespie, Buddy DeFranco, Lee Konitz, Stan Getz, Lennie Tristano, and Max Roach among the illustrious personnel. The solos are brief but usually quite colorful, giving listeners a taste of the many remarkable players who were in their prime during the period.
