The Mask of Promise is a mysterious undertaking from Larry Gaab. Building atmospheres with experimental sounds and diverse synth washes, Gaab is taking listeners to the edges of sanity and insanity. The music roils in the midst of ……….. nothing. He uses silence as an integral of his sound design and will not reveal what the mask is hiding. He touches surrealism, angst and existentialism. It has been said and written that "being scared is fun." (I believe that it was Wendy Carlos who said it first. At least that is whom I am quoting.) If that is, indeed, true, then this disc is lots of fun. It will appeal to fans of Numina, Isomorph, Andrea Marutti, and Brannan Lane.
