AllMusic Review by

The Lady Sings is the title of a Billie Holiday collection initially released by Decca in 1956 and reissued by the Charly budget label in 1993. The 16 recordings date from the mid- to late '30s and early '40s, and represent some of this singer's very best early works, as she redefined the art of jazz singing in collaboration with many of the most accomplished improvising instrumentalists of her generation. For a much larger selection (99 tracks) covering an even larger segment of Billie Holiday's career (1935-1949), see the identically titled and equally affordable four-CD box set released by Proper in 2001.
