Folkways' series of jazz LPs released in the late '70s were generally random and this album is no exception. There is a generous amount of music included, 18 selections, and for no real reason nine White bands from the 1920s have one number apiece on the first side while the flip side features nine Black bands. Most of the performances are fairly obscure, making this a worthy acquisition for 1920s collectors although they would probably prefer to acquire the complete sessions on CD. The album has music from many interesting groups ranging from The Charleston Chasers, The Original Indiana Five and The New Orleans Owls to Jabbo Smith, Erskine Tate, the Savoy Bearcats and Charlie Creath.
