Despite its title, this three-LP boxed set from Time-Life focuses only on jazz guitarists up to and including Charlie Christian, but it does a definitive job. Eddie Lang (six songs including a duet with fellow guitarist Carl Kress), Django Reinhardt (six), Oscar Aleman (one), Charlie Christian (six), Lonnie Johnson (five including a duet with Lang), Bernard Addison (two), Teddy Bunn (three), Dick McDonough (two), Eddie Durham (two), Carmen Mastren (two), Carl Kress (two), George Van Eps (one) and Al Casey (two) are all featured in a wide variety of settings ranging from unaccompanied solos to large bands. The swing-oriented music is often classic, some of the performances are fairly rare and the 56-page booklet is excellent. This is one of the best of the Time-Life jazz reissues but long out of print.
