St. Etienne might have the style, but the Januaries have the tunes. Instead of spinning ironic circles around itself, "The Girl's Insane" floats along currents of lethargic pop with enough restrained, alabaster swagger to dish it out with the best of them. Sure, there's only so many times bands can rely on reconstructionist props to stroke their egos. Sure, the unnecessarily tame versions of just this one song is more than a bit on the pathetic side (different lengths over different remixes). But this is also refreshing, satisfying charm city.
