AllMusic Review by

Conceptual found-sound electro-collagists Matmos switched labels and maintained a relatively low profile between their 2008 album Supreme Balloon and this EP, which serves as an anticipatory stopgap release leading up to their 2013 offering The Marriage of True Minds. The three songs for The Ganzfeld EP manage to go all over the map in under half-an-hour. An edit of "Very Large Green Triangles" sounds most like the strange sound-sampling electronica fans are most used to from Matmos, with vocal recordings twisted around pop-friendly beats. An icy remix with muffled tones bridges the first track to a collage of monotonous, spoken word recordings converging into a dizzying cacophony of dissonant voices with subtle organ drones below it on "Just Waves." The song goes on for over 12 minutes, and a conditioned ear will keep expecting the noise to eventually be broken by a beat of some sort, but that relief never arrives. "Just Waves" is by far the most avant-garde piece on the scattered Ganzfeld EP. The release is short enough that it doesn't become incredibly grating, but even Matmos superfans might not be inspired to listen to some of these experiments more than once.
